The true challenge is keeping it cool, quiet, and clean as time passes. So I will share all of them and point out which one I recommend based on my experience after building hundreds of computers from scratch. ![]() You can configure the fans in various ways to give you different results.
So there was a great deal of serendipity involved," Radner said. ![]() "It stayed in my memory as did that of Prudence Jopson. It was at that exhibition that Hilary Radner from RDS Gallery saw his work. It was an A1-sized print of the waterfall in Glenleith where there are glowworms. Last year, one of his good friends, Prudence Jopson, co-curated "Mental Health - Response Received” and encouraged Butler to submit a work, which he did. Not specifically him but loss of identity in general." It’s a nice theme to continue to explore. So that was a good starting point for me to explore. "I had his diary to go through, lots of imagery of him. His high school folio was themed on a loss of identity as a result of his uncle being shot down during World War 2 in Egypt. ![]() The process he is following is similar to the one he used in high school and gives a monotone, dreamy finish to his works. "I don’t really know anyone else doing things this way." He has maintained a friendship with his art teacher from high school and is in regular contact, checking out how he did things back then. PHOTO: SUPPLIED"It can cause a lot of anger and frustration, especially since it’s been 11 years - I’m a bit rusty." "It can take 20 minutes to an hour to get a plate ready and if you don’t get everything perfect, you put it through the press and it comes out rubbish and you have to start again. The whole process is a bit of a thrill, or gamble, he says. "The plates deteriorate incredibly quickly. It is painstakingly delicate work as each plate can be used only once, or maybe twice. I’m also playing around with gouache to add a more personal touch." "I’ve had a lot of time to mull over what I want to do."īutler has chosen to use an "obscure" printmaking method to create his works called photolithography, which involves applying ink to a specialised paper which uses a chemical reaction to create a print over a chosen photograph. Those friends continued to remind him gently of his love for art and he set up a studio space at home. PHOTO: SUPPLIED"Coincidentally, when I sold the other cafe, one of the reasons behind it was so I could have more time, to have a better work-life balance art and it had been a year and I still hadn’t done anything," he said. Printmaking had been what really drew him when he fell in love with art at high school - when he gave up all subjects but arts. With a bit of prodding from friends aware of his artistic talent, Butler found and bought a printmaking press. More than a decade later Butler, who is still immersed in hospitality as co-owner of Morning Magpie and used to own a second cafe, admits art-making has always been a niggle in the back of his mind. "I didn’t want to be a poor artist, so I started working hospitality." ![]() It is one he gave up after high school despite having won scholarships to Elam and Ilam art schools. But with some prodding from good friends, Butler is rediscovering his love for creating art. You put so much effort in it is a bit daunting." "It’s something that has been quite hidden, so I’m a little nervous. ![]() Anyone can get on it and you get a 'free' up to date version of the program but you have to contribute and give feedback. There isn't any one audio browser on the windows platform that comes close to doing a majority of what's needed. Sometimes you want to find things, sometimes you want to be creative with what you find. Again, it allows you different ways of browsing. Very clever and very useful.Īnother people have mentioned is XO, and that is great as well. I only upgraded recently so I haven't checked it out. The browser in Reason 12 has just had an overhaul and is supposed to be improved. The browser in Samplitude is actually very good, at least for what I use it for. The Cubase browser is powerful but a chore to set up. The Ableton browser is very slow - it takes ages to refresh files. I'll keep checking it out but so far not impressed (just my workflow probably). I can see it's powerful, but it's maybe for a different type of user. ![]() I've tried Soundminer Plus and I found it clunky. It's a shame they didn't concentrate on a proper audio browser. I guess they want the 'kids' to buy their loops! We get it, but jeez, don't leave us half-blind. I really dislike the later versions of the program as it just bombards you with ads and flashing images. I also use an old version of Loopcloud - v3 or 4 (can't remember) anyway that works quite well. ![]() But it's very handy for some stuf and the interface is nice. I didn't spend a lot of time with it because it kept crashing. But maybe in the latest release it's sorted that out now. It's got a lot of options and I find it very creative and inspiring.ĪDSR Sample manager I always found to be slow/buggy. Oftentimes I'll use foobar2000 to step through stems from a track and reassemble and compile them to one new master file. I'll browse samples in a different way I'll browse stems for tracks, and how I browse finished projects as well. That's the trouble, how we audition and how we listen to the music we make varies not just from person to person, but the individual as well. I actually use it a lot for general browsing 'of a certain kind'. To those that mentioned the browsers in Studio One and REAPER, I agree. Lots of options for tags and file information. The interface is nice and you can collapse your folders or expand them. This alone is a very powerful workflow feature that other programs don't provide (to my knowledge). You just need to quickly fill out a dialog box of where you're exporting to - et voila - you get a perfect render of your down-pitched and marker selected loop! Super quick and easy and working out of the box. I'd looped my old render to just a couple of bars and pitched it down and it was sounding good. So if you are familiar with that, you'll know how it works.īut the best thing of all was the little 'export as' button on the bottom right. You can also draw markers for loops and you can zoom in very quickly with the way its implemented the zoom feature. The pitch shifting sounds good to my ears. What I really love about this program is I just browsed an old project in Ableton and played it back slowed down 4/5 semitones. Doh! You should close the program and restart it after building a database of your files, so if it crashes you won't lose everything. I also lost all the music library folder and had to scan again for another hour. The program did crash however after I tried to do some fade in edits on a file. It's a bit fiddly to use and different to other programs, but easy enough to figure it out. It took about an hour to scan nearly 200 Gigs on my music drive. Asks you for the mail and password when you install it though so keep it handy! You need to give an email and register but I just used a 10minute mail and it worked. Rather it’s a repurposed Cardassian station that served as the headquarters for the occupation and subjugation of the planet Bajor. DS9 switches it up by placing the series on a space station, but it’s not a Federation starbase. Every other incarnation of the franchise takes the place of a Federation starship. The main thing that distinguishes Deep Space Nine from the rest of the Star Trek series is its settings. I refer you back to the warning at the beginning of this article and say, “to each their own.” Hold off on the emails, and let’s agree that Star Trek is fine television, even if we don’t love every episode or every series. I, too, want to write Danny a nasty email for writing such atrocities as “ Lower Decks is not funny” and not giving Prodigy a chance. However, the first season of Strange New Worlds was a refreshing return to form, and I hope it continues to build on what’s working in that series. I haven’t watched Prodigy, so I can’t speak to that series. Star Trek: Lower Decks is not funny, and I gave up after the first season. Picard is an unadulterated violation of the Star Trek franchise (maybe season three will be better, but I’m keeping my guard up). I enjoyed about half of the episodes of the first season of Star Trek: Discovery, but the rest is unbelievably bad. To my mind, there are only one and a half seasons of watchable television in the streaming era. And Enterprise only really found its footing during its fourth season right before it was abruptly canceled.Īnd don’t even get me started on Star Trek Universe ( Trek produced from 2017 onward). Star Trek: Voyager starts strong but falters after the third season and remains a rocky affair until the end of the series. The final season of Next Gen is hit-and-miss as far as quality stories go. Season two gets better, but TNG doesn’t get good until the third season. The inaugural season of Star Trek: The Next Generation is unwatchable, even for die-hard Trekkies like myself. Season three of the original series is generally considered to be of lesser quality than the first two. And by the time you reach season seven, nearly every episode is top-tier Trek.ĭS9 is the only series in the franchise to pull off this feat. Moreover, each season is better than the last. There are no stinker seasons of Deep Space Nine. I mean that it is consistently good television. And I don’t mean to say it maintains the same quality from seasons one to seven. The best argument that Deep Space Nine is the best Star Trek series is its consistent quality.
